« Strada Nuova and its “bacari” | Giudecca and St Giorgio Maggiore: charming and truly Venetian islands »
A relatively non-touristy area lying just west of the Rialto area and home to one of Venice’s most neighborly campos, Campo San Giacomo Dell’Orio – a very pretty square with a strong community spirit and a sprinkling of trees, benches plus many well-reviewed places to eat. In addition this campo is the preferred campo by children par excellence, that during all seasons they spend time there playing safely together.
While, in mid-July this campo is living up by the feast in honor of its patron. The feast this year runs from July 12th to July 21st, so put it on your calendar to be sure to don’t miss it!
Concerts, a gastronomic stand and a charity raffle make up this local fair at Campo San Giacomo dell’Orio. The event represents the meeting point of the community where spend evenings cooking on big grills, eating traditional dishes and listening live music.
The Best Western Premier Hotel Sant’Elena suggests you to go there not so late if you want to eat because the line of people waiting to order their dinner often snakes all the way through the campo. You will find mixed grill, “cicchetti” and local dishes, as well as beer, wine and soft drinks.
Every evening during the week long feast there is a band playing at the bandstand at the far end of the campo. This year, San Giacomo dell’Orio feast becomes the longest feast in Venice with 10 evenings and concerts.
This event provides a great occasion to “do as the Venetians do” in a truly beautiful atmosphere. Sit out and enjoy some food, great music and feel like local people!
