Around Sant’Elena

Around Sant’Elena

  • Venetian Arsenal

Surrounded by a tall defensive wall, the Arsenal was a complex of 24 state owned shipyards producing the majority of Venice’s war vessels. Today the Arsenale is used as a military zone and only open to the public during special events and exhibitions.

  • Venice Biennale

Always avant-garde promoting a new artistic trend, the Biennale is located a short 5 minutes’ walk from the Best Western Premier Hotel Sant’Elena. The first Biennale was held in 1895, and it now in its 54th edition. A celebration of Cinema, Music, Theater, Dance and Architecture, just choose the discipline that most appeals to you.

  • Church of Sant’Elena

The church of Sant’Elena, located just steps from the hotel, was built to celebrate the empress mother of Constantine. The urn with the relics of the Saint was initially preserved in a chapel erected by the Augustinian Friars; later, the same chapel was included in a church and a convent was built nearby. The church owes much of its current appearance to a restoration by the Benedictin Olivetan monks.

Read the legend of Sant’Elena in the “history” section of the hotel website, which describes the story of the island.
