MANET Return to Venice

Manet_ Palazzo Ducale_Hotel Sant'Elena Venice

The extraordinary exhibition designed by the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, with the special collaboration of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, will be hosted at the Palazzo Ducale from 24th April to 18th August 2013.

In particular, it will be exciting to see Manet’s overwhelming Olympia (1867) – a picture which is leaving France for the first time – next to the sublime Venus of Urbino by Titian (1538), exceptionally loaned by the Uffizi Gallery: this was the picture Manet admired in Florence and which gave him the inspiration for his brazen femme de plaisir.
The exhibition will offer a “historic” comparison between two different examples of “modernity”, between two universal art icons.

The 80 works in the exhibition will investigate the Italian soul of Édouard Manet’s painting, who boldly explores the contemporary instances and opens the way to Impressionism.
The colors, the modernity, the spirit of the great French painter will be read back through the models of Italian Renaissance painting, from which Manet was influenced during two trips to the Venetian, in 1853 and in 1874.

In the exhibition you can admire, next to the artist's masterpieces, some exceptional works inspired by the great sixteenth-century Venetian tableaux, as Titian, Tintoretto and Lotto. The influence of Venice immediately emerges, and is inseparable from the boldness with which the painter probed contemporary art and moved away from academic convention. It will explore these ties and this passion through an extraordinary nucleus of the artist’s works, enabling a series of direct comparisons never before possible, and finally shedding some light on the close tie Manet had with Italy and Venice.

A new focus on contemporary languages alongside the International Biennal of Art.
